Freddie Hendrix 2004

"Photo-JAZZ-ography" is a project that I did not plan. In retrospect it is somewhat like a diary. Over 30 years ago I took a photo of jazz pianist and composer/arranger Marylou Williams at the Studio Museum in Harlem. I realized immediately that I was witnessing history and a true legend. From that event until now, I have documented musicians at every concert or related event that I've attended. Not as a working professional, but as a fan of the artist and the music I love. I have documented over 100 musicians. In these photographs I have tried to capture something about the performer that would help me to recall the talent, energy, mood  or feeling of the music. Although we can not hear the music in these photographs, I hope the viewer will experience the music of their souls.
